Garden - 2009

Welcome to our 2009 garden. There are a few changes from last year, the most prominent of which are the second-year Delphiniums in front of the greenhouse and shed. We think they're quite striking with the Petunias in front. The front little bed to the left has the Arctic Blue Willow we received from Julia last year. It was planted out late last season and was slow making a comeback this year. But, it's doing fine now. Nasturtiums surround the willow.

The rose bed is off to a good start, with Joost keeping watch. In the front corner is the JP Connell rose that emerges as a yellow bloom, fading to a light cream. In the centre of the rose bed is the Red-Leafed Rose (Rosa glauca, or R. rubrifolia). Most of the roses overwintered well, but we did lose three out of eleven. Gone are the Morden Sunrise, Prairie Joy, and Cuthbert Grant roses. They have been replaced by Hansa, Topaz Jewel, and a Double White de Coubert.

One of the real delights this year is the Lady's Mantle. It overwintered beautifully and more than doubled in size. We added an Artemesia to the corner of the bed with the hopes the two will blend together as they mature. We think they bring a nice colour combination in foliage and nice contrasting textures.

Miss Froggy is holding a Pansy 'Ultima Morpho', and seems quite pleased about it.

One of the other additions to the garden this year is a Hollyhock. It produced its first bloom this morning. And another one is on its way.

Here's a macro shot of the Delphinium blooms. This one is a lovely light blue with a dark bee.

Susan's planter was repatriated to the garden this past week, after spending last summer and the winter at Jennifer's house. We had to move it for the construction of the addition to the house. After all the plants we started from seed this year, we ended up going to the nursery to buy some Wave Petunias and Bacopa to fill in the planter for this season.

The addition of the bird bath last fall seems to be appreciated by the birds. Here a Chickadee is taking a drink.
