Squirrels and Birds

Today was an unusual day for our friend, 'Buddy' the red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). He chattered incessantly almost all day long. Here he is perched on one of the lattice frame finials, near where we were sitting - apparently to get our attention. Even after we put peanuts in the feeder, he kept up his noisy monologue. Later, we discovered him taking seeds from the canary bird vine on the lattice work.

With some patience and the camera set to a super fast shutter speed, these pine siskins were caught in flight battling over rights to the feeding station.

This is a new finch feeder bought at Home Hardware. It is recommended by Mark Cullen, Home Hardware's gardening expert. It was kind of hard to believe the blurb on the packaging that said there is room for up to 12 finches to feed on the nyger seed inside. It works great! Here there are only two pine siskins on the feeder, but it's a start.

Here's an updated photo from August 12th. This is more like it!! They much prefer this feeder to the other yellow feeder. They both contain nyger (thistle) seed.
