Progress on the deck construction has been slower than expected. The weather is not cooperating. Day after day of rain, sometimes a slow drizzle and at other times a downpour. However, here we are getting a start on laying in the deck boards. We decided to go with treated 2x4 finished decking. It gives a nice finish and the narrower deck boards are less susceptible to 'cupping' (where the deck boards curl and retain water).

As part of the deck construction, we are also closing in the stairwell that leads to the downstairs back door. We are shingling the roof of the top section of the stairwell enclosure. The lower part, at deck level where I'm standing, will be a recessed part of the deck that will accommodate the barbeque. Here the walls will be covered with a more heat resistent siding than vinyl.
Today we had a contractor come around to give us a quote on doing the siding. Although we had intended to hang the siding ourselves, we need to get it done more quickly than the time we now have available.
