Kampen and Hattem

Tuesday, May 1, 2007

Today we had a tour of the countryside, and visited the historic towns of Kampen and Hattem.

Kampen has a nice harbour and was one of a number of north Atlantic cities that formed the Hanseatic League. You may want to 'Google' this term if you don't recall your European history lessons.

Here we saw some fine old sailing vessels along the harbour wall. Most appear to be used for pleasure boats by old-time sailing enthusiasts.

There was plenty of hustle and bustle in the old centre of the town.

One of the churches in the town - de Bovenkerk te Kampen - had a spectacular pipe organ. We bought two CD's of organ music played on this organ.

Here's a photo of the church, taken from the town entrance gate.

In the town of Hattem, we admired this windmill, named de Fortuin (Fortune).

The old town of Hattem also has a wonderful entrance gate.

The town is probably best known as the home of Anton Pieck, the world famous Dutch illustrator and painter. Here we visited the Anton Pieck museum and bought a calendar and two more prints to add to our collection at home.
