Today we are traveling across Holland from Hoogeveen to the province of Noord Holland and the seaside town of Schoorl. We have rented a cottage there for a week.
On the way we went across the Afsluitdijk (Dutch for 'Closure Dike'). It's an awesome piece of engineeering that closes off what used to be the Suider Zee from the North Sea. For more information about the Afsluitdijk, go to this summary. You'll also see a great satellite photo.

Here are a couple of photos:
The dike is 30 kilometers long with a 4-lane divided highway on top of it.
This photos shows the shape of the stones that were hand-laid to complete the dike. It's part of a display and museum at the halfway point.
We're thinking that if you put stones like this in place for a few years, you'd have serious back problems and eligible for a substantial WCB payout.
