This male Lapland Longspur, Calcarius lapponicus, made a visit to our yard and has brought hundreds of his family. They flash into the yard in a great flock and almost carpet the ground. And then just as quickly something spooks them and they all fly off.
This is the female. Very pretty, but without the dramatic yellow beak and the dark head coloring.
They're on their way to the north slope of Alaska - their breeding grounds and where they'll spend the summer.
