This small Kubota excavator is beginning to dig the first hole for the support cylinders (sonotubes).

Contractor Jim is checking the depth of the hole to make sure it will be deep enough for the sonotube.
Space is really limited between the house and the garden. So, the Kubota has to actually climb on the dirt it dug from the holes in order to dig the remaining holes.
The final step for today is to use the 'jumping jack' to compact the soil at the bottom of the holes.
